The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre take place during 14th Century China during the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty, roughly 100 years after the events of Return of the Condor Heroes. After decades of struggles, famine, and bitterness which the Chinese citizens blamed on the Yuan Dynasty's misgovernment, the Martial Arts sects have begun to rebel. Prince Ruyang asks Cheng Kun, a Shaolin monk with an ulterior motive, for a plan on how to deal with the rebels. "The wielder of Heavenly Sword and/or Dragon Sabre rules the world." This well-known legend in the Martial Arts community is the impetus for the tale of Zhang Wuji. The story begins with how his parents met, then tells his trials as an adolescent, proceeds to relate his rise to prominence and reveals the secret behind Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre and ends with the confluence of Wuji's love life, the Martial Arts sects' long-standing grudges, and cruel fate.

Yuan Cheng Zhi is the son of a general who has been killed by the emperor. He comes across a beautiful girl named Qing Qing, and they embark on exciting adventures together, with Yuan still bearing in mind his desire to avenge his father's death. On his journey, he befriends another girl, Jiu, and after they have formed a close relationship, she reveals her real identity as the royal princess, daughter of the emperor who killed Yuan's father.

The story concerns the adventures of Yang Guo, an orphaned boy in a mid-13th Century China.
From his humble beginnings, the street wise Yang Guo gets passed around from one prestigious master to another but none of them will teach him any martial arts. Qiu Chu Ji dispatches soldiers coming to arrest him with ease and leaves when he sees a signal of his Sect appear in the night sky.
